Yes, it's that time again. Yesterday was the beginning of NASCAR for the year 2007. My husband and I have been devout fans for about 7 years. The sport has also sucked in my mom and my sister. There are a lot of people out there who can not figure out why people can stand watching cars go around a circle for 3 hours. Well, there is much more to it than that. We had pretty much stopped watching professional sports due to strikes, poor examples of role models, and the obvious greed. In NASCAR, a guy has to go out and earn his money every Sunday. He is closely watched and will be fined for anything that may misrepresent the sport. It's the only sport that has a prayer before every race. It's the only sport that honors the armed forces every weekend with fly-bys and a solemn note for those that are serving their country. Trust me, it's not just a southern tradition with men flying rebel flags. It has developed a nationwide fan base with races as far west as California and possible tracks being built out this way in Washington or Denver.
While I know not all share our enthusiasm, just know it's not a crazy redneck fantasy. It's a legitimate sport with a moral compass.
